    Description

Constantine I, the Great, A.D. 307-337. AV solidus as Augustus minted at Siscia, A.D. 335. Diademed, cuirassed and draped bust right of Constantine I/Victory seated right holding inscribed shield. 4.42 g. RIC 242. AU58 ICG, a few light marks in right field of reverse; rare.
In A.D. 309 Constantine introduced the gold solidus, a denomination which was to be the standard gold coin for over 600 years. Our word "soldier" is derived from "solidus," coming from wages paid a Roman man-at-arms. It was struck in pure gold at 72 to the libra, or Roman pound. Later, the semissis (half solidus) and tremissis (third solidus) were minted. Siscia is now Sisak in Croatia.
