    Description

Elagabalus, A.D. 218-222. AR denarius minted A.D. 220-222. Laureate, cuirassed and draped bust right of Elagabalus/Elagabalus sacrificing left over altar with bull behind altar; in left field, star. RIC 88, C. 61. AU58 ICG, delicate gold and brown toning over still-visible luster.
When this coin was struck, as in more modern times, the emperor was often referred to as Elagabalus from his appointment to priesthood of the sun-god El-Gabal at Emesa in Syria. The representation of this god was a sacred conical black stone, most probably a meteorite. While this emperor's given name at birth was Varius Avitus Bassianus, when proclaimed emperor in A.D. 218, his name was changed to Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. Variants of his new name appear on the coins. On this obverse we read IMP (Commander, showing supreme command over the entire Roman army) ANTONINVS PIVS (dutiful) AVG (Augustus, a title first used by Octavian/Augustus and subsequently employed by later emperors).
