    Description

Gordian III, A.D. 238-244. AV aureus minted c. late July-December A.D. 239. Laureate, cuirassed and draped bust right of Gordian III/Providentia standing front, head left, holding globe and transverse scepter. 4.74 g. RIC 23 [as Rare] also plate 1, #9 (likely from same reverse die), C. 195. EF, edge chipped at 7 o'clock and a bit abrasively cleaned. Accompanied by my colleague David Sear's certificate of authenticity.
A caveat! There is a substantial number of dangerous forgeries of A.D. 3rd century gold aurei, mainly in "mint state" condition. These are published in Bulletin on Counterfeits by the International Bureau for the Suppression of Counterfeit Coins (IBSCC), especially in Vol. 18, #2 (1993). In cataloguing this sale, two of these modern fabrications had to be returned to the consignors, and, of course, not included in our offering. (PCGS# 100495)
