    Description

Maximianus, A.D. 286-305 (first reign). AV aureus minted at Nicomedia, A.D. 303-304. Laureate head right of Maximianus/Inscription within laurel wreath. 5.30 g. RIC 14 [as R3], C. 705, Bastien and Metzger p. 36, 10. Ex NFA XXVI (14 VIII 91), lot 304, ex Mazzini IV 704, plate LXXXVII. AU53 ICG, a few scattered marks confined to the obverse.
Diocletian established a tetrarchy, or four-person rule, in A.D. 293. Since the Roman Empire was so vast, and a greater commerce was building in the Eastern provinces, two rulers were established in the West (one senior and one junior) and two in the East (again, one senior and one junior). This also gave a continuum of rule and greater military security at the frontiers. Maximianus, or Maximian as he is sometimes called, was made senior emperor in the West. This rare coin commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the joint rule and beginning of the tetrarchy in November of A.D. 303. In A.D. 305 both Diocletian and Maximianus abdicated their power at Nicomedia and Mediolanum (now Milano, Italy).
