    Description

Pertinax, A.D. 193. AV aureus. Laureate and draped bust right of Pertinax/Laetitia standing left, holding wreath and scepter. 7.39 g. RIC 4b [as R2], C. 18. VF+ but porous, the reverse being particularly marked and scraped; most probably sea-salvaged. Very rare.
A.D. 193 was a troubled year for the Roman Empire. On the last night of A.D. 192, the megalomaniacal emperor Commodus was strangled by his wrestling partner Narcissus. The year of the four emperors began by the elevation to the purple of the 66-year-old Publius Helvius Pertinax. His reign was to be only 86 days, and all of his coins are naturally quite rare. The next ruler was Didius Julianus, who succeeded in buying the emperorship at auction, bidding 25,000 sestertii, but eventually giving each member of the Praetorian Guard 30,000 sestertii; in gold, this amount works out to be 300 aurei for each soldier. Perhaps this very coin was part payment to one of these ruthless and corrupt protectors of the emperor! Didius Julianus lasted only 66 days; afterwards, Septimius Severus and the Eastern usurper Pescennius Niger completed this unharmonious quartet.
