    Description

Probus, A.D. 276-282. AE antoninianus minted at Rome. Radiate and cuirassed bust right of Probus/Emperor on horseback left, captive below. RIC 156, C. 41. AU58 ICG, some silvering still present with surfaces delicately toned.
Some of the most fascinating collections I have helped build are ones "off the beaten track." Assembling one Roman Imperial coin of each denomination, rather than one of each emperor, can be a fulfilling and challenging pursuit, especially difficult when searching for a silver half-argenteus, a gold 11/2 scripulum or an AE double sestertius. A few other gratifying topics out of the myriad possibilities include Imperial women as portrayed on coinage, reverse personifications, animals on Roman coins and architectural reverse types.
