    Description

Valentinian III, A.D. 425-455. AV solidus minted at Thessalonica, winter A.D. 437-March 438. Helmeted, diademed, cuirassed and draped bust right of Valentinian III/Theodosius II embracing Valentinian III and Licinia Eudoxia who join hands; all three are portrayed nimbate. 4.41 g. RIC - (unpublished), Hahn -, D.O. -. Ex Tkalec II 00. AU55 ICG, superb.
Formerly unknown, a few of these marriage solidi were recently unearthed, two of which were auctioned by Tony Tkalec (see Tkalec II 00, lot 452 for this coin, and Tkalec II 01, lot 432 for another specimen struck from the same dies). The daughter of Theodosius II, Licinia Eudoxia married Valentinian III on 29 October 437. There are but a handful known of this fascinating and important ceremonial issue. (PCGS# 100574)
