Annam: Minh Mang gold 3 Tien Year 16 (1835) UNC Details (Obverse Damage) NGC,...
Description
Minh Mang gold 3 Tien Year 16 (1835) UNC Details (Obverse Damage) NGC, KM229, Schr-206D. 13.84gm. Gold coinage from the Minh Mang period is decidedly rare, in all designs and sizes. In fact, it has been over five years since the last gold issue from this period of Annamese history has graced our auction block; an example of the same type presented here, however this selection is far superior conditionally. Due to a gouge above the dragon's right foot (possibly some sort of test punch), this specimen possesses a Details designation; damage on these rare pieces is extremely common, often coins are found with greater wear and surfaces that have been completely stripped of their natural finish. The UNC qualifier here is important, as every other example of this type to sell with Heritage has also been a Details coin, though none have been graded above AU until now. Intermittent blushes of red patina and a welcoming frosty surface provide the remnants of originality that collectors look to find on these issues.Metal: Gold
Diameter: 29mm
Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
