    Description

GRAND TOUR OBJECTS. A 19th century collection of Classically-themed plaster intaglio casts. Made by Paoletti Impronte in Rome circa 1800-1850 for sale to Europeans undertaking the Grand Tour. Bound in a book-like box entitled MUSEI DIVERSI, the collection contains 40 white plaster casts of varying sizes ranging from 20 to 75 mm, each depicting a Classical-style bust, including gods and goddesses (Minerva, Jupiter, Hercules, and Jesus Christ[!]), ancient historical personages (Antinous, Augustus, the Cumaean Sibyl), or scenes such as Mars driving a chariot, Cupid and Psyche, St. George and the dragon. The inside cover front and back bear a listing of each depiction hand-annotated in Italian. A notation at the bottom of the rear cover indicates the collection is no. 86 in a limited production run. A few of the castings have pulled free from the green paper backing, and the cover shows minor wear and damage, otherwise intact and a charming reminder of the link between Classicism and the Victorian world.
