    Description

GREEK SOUTHERN ITALY OR SICILY. Terracotta shoulder-length bust of Demeter. Ca. 450 BC. Life-size hollow terracotta bust depicts the serene goddess wearing a polos, a cylindrical hat resembling a grain basket, decorated with a bow. Expertly recomposed from large fragments by conservators at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the bust stands 18" (46 cm) tall, 23" when resting on its custom black base. Her hair is drawn back in tight waves that retain traces of red-brown pigment; holes in her ears once held metal earrings. Covered overall in thin white slip. Top of the polos is open for pouring votive libations of grain and / or wine. Vent-hole in back, with letter A incised on back of polos. A necklace of restrung ancient earth-colored beads is provided as an added adornment.

From the Estate of Gloria and Melville B. Nimmer, Westwood, CA. Acquired from Summa Galleries in 1981 and conserved under the direction of Dr. Jiri Frel, director of antiquities for the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu CA.
