    Description

INDO-GREEK. Gandharan figure of Bodhisattva, ca. 2nd-3rd century AD. Gray schist figure stands 12" (31 cm) tall. The handsome young Buddha-to-be is nimbate and wears princely robes, an ornate necklace, bracelets and armlets, and and an ornate tiara topped by a peacock in splendor. He holds a flaming torch, symbol of enlightenment. The rectangular base is decorated with floral motifs. A few chips missing from nimbus and base, one thumb broken off, otherwise intact and quite attractive.

From a Northern California private collection.

According to Buddhist lore, Bodhisattvas are individuals who stand on the brink of Buddha-hood but defer final Enlightenment so as to dedicate their lives to the welfare of all beings. Their cult became popular at an early date in Gandhara and spread from there into many parts of the Buddhist world. As Buddhas-to-be are usually born into princely families, they are often shown in royal attire, with elaborate jewelry and crowns.
