    Description

Persia. Circa. 1000 BC. Bronze ceremonial 'plumed' or 'spike-butted' ax head. Unsharpened and thus likely never used as a weapon, this attractive piece, 7" (20 cm) in length, is of stylized angular design with four distinctive protruding spikes or "plumes" projecting from the rear of the mounting socket. The socket itself is decorated with raised lines simulating wrapped chords and other incised decoration; a tiny hole is present for securing the head to the wooden handle. Intact and undamaged, with a beautiful untouched green patina and light earthen encrustation. Cf. "Ancient Persian Bronzes in the Adams Collection" (London, 1974) p. 42, fig. 6.

From the Rose Kujawa Collection. Purchased on December 2, 1987 from Antiquarium Ltd. of NYC. Purchase papers and Certificate of Authenticity provided.
