    Description

ROMAN EMPIRE. Ca. AD 50-150. Oil lamp with gladiatorial scene. Of Romano-Gallic design and manufacture, 4.2" (10.5 cm) long, with a round body and volute nozzle. Discus is decorated with a combat scene between a Thracian and a Hoplomachus, the Thracian on the left raising his sword to strike, the Hoplomachus on the on the right turning away and lowering his weapon in apparent surrender. Intact and unrestored, the red slip glaze showing considerable wear and flaking. An interesting scene from the Roman arena!

Roman gladiators formed many distinct classes who were set against one another in "matched pairs." The Thracian, who wore a broad-brimmed helmet, laminated arm protection, a single greave on the right leg and carried a short, curved sword and a square shield, was often matched against a Hoplomachus, who wore similar armor but bore a smaller round shield, a straight sword and had heavier leg protection. Just such a combat is depicted on this first-second century AD oil lamp.

From a Southern California private collection.
