    Description

GREEK. Marble head of a Hellenistic king, ca. 175-100 BC. Possibly representing the Seleucid King Demetrius I of Syria (161-150 BC), the slightly under life-sized head is 6.5" (16.5 cm) high and depicts a man in his 20s or 30s with a rather fleshy face and a head of curly hair bound with a Macedonian diadem, symbol of Hellenistic kingship. The overall shape of the face, the depiction of hair and the representation of the eyes all match other known busts of this king. The face is heavily damaged, with the nose missing entirely and browline, chin and cheeks displaying significant chipping and wear; the back of the head is also heavily damaged and subject to a crude attempt at conservation with applied plaster. Nevertheless, Arthur Houghton, then curator of the Getty Museum in Malibu, described the head as "definitely Greek" and "a very important piece" when it was shown to him by the collector, Mr. Nimmer, in January 1985 (as documented in a memo appended to the original purchase invoice), contemporary marble depictions of Hellenistic rulers being exceedingly rare in any condition. Custom mounted on a heavy black stand.

From the Estate of Gloria and Melville B. Nimmer, Westwood, CA. Acquired from Astarte Gallery, London, 19 August, 1982.
