Description
Splendid gold "Sunface" 8 Escudos
Provincias de Rio de la Plata 8 Escudos 1813J, KM9, Fr-1. One of the greatest South American rarities, Argentina's first independent gold issue, the 1813 "Sunface" 8 Escudos is arguably one of the most beautiful designs of the early 19th century South America. Many don't realize but the "Sunface" made it all the way to the Argentinean national flag. El Sol de Mayo (Sun of May) became the country's national emblem with its origins in the 1810 May Revolution, the starting point of Argentina's war of independence. In choice AU condition, the coin offered here is amongst the finest known of the extremely elusive issue. Faint hairlines in the reverse kept the coin from a higher grade. There is a small natural planchet flaw between "DEL" and "RIO" on the obverse that doesn't in any way compromise the great eye appeal of the piece. In May 2008, the Millennia piece that had belonged to the late Coco Derman of Buenos Aires, sold for $161,000 in MS62 NGC.
