Description

Rio de la Plata 8 Reales 1826 RA-P MS63 NGC, La Rioja mint, KM20, CJ-26.2. Seven Laurel Pairs variety. Coin rotation. The first year of the La Rioja "Sunface" 8 Reales, 11 years after the original Rio de la Plata "Sunface" issue that was minted in Potosi. This series is pretty scarce, especially in high grade, and very coveted among Latin American collectors for incredible design, but this inaugural date seems to be rare in any meaningful condition. We could only find a single public auction record since this very coin sold with our firm in 2011, a meager VF30 that still managed a $900 hammer in 2015. The current selection boasts sterling ring of neon azure that frames the devices, including the coveted sunface, which survives here in spectacular form. The details are sharp throughout with no discernable areas of weakness that might offset the sublime presentation. Specialists of the series will appreciate how rare of an occurrence this selection is, and the Choice Mint State assignment is still good enough for sole "Top Pop".
