    Description

Aluminum 1868 Assay Commission Medal, Julian AC-4

1868 Assay Commission Medal. PR63 Uncertified. Julian AC-4, R.5. Aluminum, 33.3 mm., 89.5 grains. The obverse motif is an allegorical standing figure of Columbia torching an assortment of weapons, an obvious reference to the end of the Civil War. Around, MINT OF THE UNITED STATES, and below, PHILAD. The reverse has a wreath of oak and laurel around the three line inscription, ANNUAL ASSAY 1868. Both designs were by William Barber, whose WB initials appear at the lower right of the obverse design. This is a pleasing proof with light gray surfaces and fully mirrored fields. The devices are lustrous, with light cameo contrast evident on both sides.
Ex: Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc., Auction #51 (12/1991), lot 268 but withdrawn due to a typographical error in the catalog.
