    Description

1870 Assay Commission Medal. PR64 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-8, R.4. Copper, 33.5 mm., 331.8 grains. The obverse design is an allegorical figure of Moneta, standing and turned partly to the viewer's right. Her left arm is outstretched and holds a scale, with a snake held by her right hand. A dog and strongbox are at her feet, and assay implements are visible in the field at the right. William Barber's initials are at the lower left, and J. POLLOCK DIRECTOR is in the exergue. A wreath of oak and laurel on the reverse is open at the top, and contains the three line inscription ANNUAL ASSAY 1870. An angular defect at the top of the digit 8 is present on all known examples.
This is a splendid chocolate-brown medal that is approaching Gem quality. Traces of original red can still be seen among the devices on each side. R.W. Julian considered this an R.3 medal, although we have chosen the R.4 designation. This is the most plentiful of all 19th century Assay Medals, but we find it difficult to believe that more than 200 examples (required for an R.3 rating) of this medal are known.
