    Description

1883 Assay Commission Medal. PR64 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-26, R.5. Copper, 33.6 mm., 314.8 grains. The obverse has a bust of President Chester A. Arthur facing left, with the legend THE MINT OF THE UNITED STATES and ANNUAL ASSAY 1883. The reverse is from the same die used in 1882. The engraver of this medal is generally cited as George Morgan, based on an entry in the 1914 catalog of the National Numismatic Collection. This is a splendid example with rich chestnut-brown surfaces. The interior field on the obverse is reflective with hints of lilac and iridescent toning. The reverse is similarly toned and both sides are sharply struck. A tiny chatter mark is visible beneath OP of OPUS on the reverse.
Ex: Boyd Collection, according to our consignor.
