    Description

1898 Assay Commission Medal. PR60 Uncertified. Julian AC-42, R.5. Silver, 34.0 mm., 321.0 grains. The obverse features a full-size bust of President William McKinley, facing left, with his name in the left and right fields. The reverse exhibits a bust of Pallas on top of a column, with a standing female figure to the left and a standing male figure to the right. These figures represent Justice and a skilled workman. Above is the legend MINT OF THE UNITED STATES ANNUAL ASSAY, and below is the date. The designers were Charles Barber who signed the obverse C.E. BARBER F. on the bust truncation, and George Morgan whose initial M appears on the exergual line. Both sides have bright silver surfaces with a matte texture, and with minor hairlines. Traces of gold toning appear along the border. Examples were produced in silver, copper, and white metal, with the silver medals more available than the others.
