White Metal 1899 Assay Commission Medal, Julian AC-43

1899 Assay Commission Medal. MS60 Uncertified. Julian AC-43, R.5. White Metal, 34.0 mm., 240.7 grains. The obverse depicts President William McKinley, in profile to the left. The reverse motif is a bust of Pallas above a shield, with an eagle below. The whole is framed by a wreath of olive, with the legend UNITED STATES MINT ANNUAL ASSAY 1899. It is not known how many of these were produced in white metal, but the quantity is certainly quite small. If 40 of these were coined in silver and 10 in bronze, according to Mint records, we assume that even fewer were produced in white metal. Although we hesitate to use the word "unique" without supporting evidence, it would not surprise us if this is the only known example in this composition. Lustrous light gray surfaces with a matte appearance. Both sides have minor marks, but none are of any significance.
