    Description

    Legendary 1921 Kookaburra Pattern Penny
    The Finest Certified by PCGS

George V copper-nickel Specimen Pattern Penny 1921 SP65 PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM-Pn22, McDonald Type 13, Renniks Type 12. A stunning example of this extremely rare Pattern issue. Fully lustrous, both sides of this specimen are well struck-up with the obverse displaying light, dusky tone. A smattering of minuscule marks may be located with the aid of a loupe, although in hand the coin exhibits superb eye-appeal. In addition to being the single finest certified example of the 1921 Pattern Kookaburra Pennies at either PCGS or NGC, the provenance of this piece may be traced back to the collection of the late Deputy Master of the Royal Mint at Melbourne from 1921-25, Albert Malet Le Souef (the original Spink envelope is included with this lot).

The Kookaburra Patterns of 1919-21 were produced in an effort to replace what was considered a bulky minor coinage in bronze. Although the weight was cut in half, the added cost of importing nickel and, strangely enough, of retooling vending machine mechanisms, resulted in the cancelation of the proposed changes to the coinage.
