Description

George V pattern Penny in lead 1911, type of KM23, AU details. Minor obverse scratches. The reverse has been severely defaced with numerous cuts, perhaps from a die-cutting tool. This possibly unique trial strike of the first-year Penny issue is quite an enigma. Quite a few of the reverse letters are sharply re-cut and the tail of the 9 in the date has been shortened, either in the die, or by one of the scratches, we will let you decide.

It is not so unusual for a trial strike of first year coinage to be made, but we could find no reference listing this piece for the 1911 Australia coinage. Obviously of extreme interest and certain to demand considerable attention.
