Description

Rare First Legend Jubilee Sovereign From Melbourne

Victoria gold "Jubilee Head - First Legend" Sovereign 1887-M MS64 PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM10, S-3867, Marsh-131C (R5). DISH.M4, First legend, JEB lower close variety. Jubilee Sovereigns from Melbourne saw no less than four different JEB variations, all of them rare as only an average of 44,641 coins were minted from each die pair according to Iverson's illustrious research. The number represents only around 4.75% of the entire mint's production for the Jubilee year Sovereign. Iverson further concludes this is an extremely hard coin to acquire, noting that it was absent from both the Bentley and the Quartermaster collections. The present selection is one of the finest known for the date, and presently the finest certified at PCGS for this DISH variety.
