Description

Lovely Near-Choice Melbourne 1872/1 Overdate

Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1872/1-M MS62 PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM6, S-3854. An enthralling representative of this famous overdate, recounting the the tale of dies lost to sea and the efforts of jeweler Julius Hogarth to re-work the 1871 dies by altering, somewhat crudely, the last 1 in date to a 2. An attractive luminosity greets the gaze at the tilt of the wrist, accentuating the raised motifs and fields that admit only minute disturbances. Privately purchased from Jaggard's in Sydney, Australia; accompanied by their flip.
