Description

Prized Mint State Type 1b Adelaide Pound

South Australia. British Colony - Victoria gold "Adelaide" Pound 1852 MS61 NGC, KM1, Fr-3, Rennik-pg. 21, McDonald-pg. 41. Type 1b reverse with die crack, wide reeding, and beading within two linear circles. A wonderful addition to the greater Australian series, and one that is always a treat to handle when located in Mint State. Among the earliest forms of hard currency issued by the colony, struck from gold mined during the gold rush of the 1850s. Distinguished from its relatively more common counterpart by the linear border to the reverse, providing an instantly recognizable and unique motif for these contested issues. While witnessing only a single example in a sale is a delight, two of this variety so fine is nearly unheard of, and likely the first instance since the famed Quartermaster Collection. Prominent mint brilliance enlivens the outer banks which find themselves remarkably free of handling apart from the occasional mark or wisp, and having developed a most pleasing patination, is worthy of inclusion to a quality-conscious collection.
