Description

Khevenhuller-Metsch. Johann Joseph Taler 1761 MS63 NGC, Vienna mint, KM1, Dav-1188. With its seat in the present-day Austrian state of Carinthia, noted for its sublime Alpine landscapes, the beauty of this supremely scarce emission should come as no surprise. A pristine, bluish-silver color with an undercurrent of red clay blankets the surfaces, while a silhouette effect around the lengthy legends shimmers around the peripherals. Close inspection reveals the absence of wear, even in the elaborate reverse shield, where the most minute of details retain the boldness of the original strike. While we have previously handled the 1771 issue (KM2), this is our first occasion caring for the rarer 1761 issue.

A religious divide in the Khevenhuller family, including some members directly supporting Gustavus Adolphus during the Thirty-Years War, led some members to find safety in Protestant German lands, where they would marry into the Saxon Metzsch family, creating the Khevenhuller-Metsch branch.
