An Exceptionally Rare "Election" Medal in Gold

Salzburg. Hieronymous gold "Election as Archbishop" Medal of 12 Ducats 1772-Dated MS62 NGC, HZ-3179, Zöttl-3120, BR-4414. 37mm. 41.59gm. By Martin Krafft. An exceedingly rare medallic type, more frequently encountered in silver, though almost never available in gold. While admitting some minor wisps in the fields and light dings to the edge, almost certainly by virtue of its weight, the piece on the whole remains noticeably flashy and entirely presentable. Our research suggests that only one other example has come to auction in the last 15 years, part of Numismatica Ars Classica's January 2005 Auction 28 (lot 905). Certainly a cornerstone for the serious collection of Austrian medals.
