Exceedingly Prooflike Medallic 6 Ducat
Salzburg. Hieronymous gold Medallic "1200th Anniversary of the
Archbishopric" 6 Ducat 1782-M MS63★ Prooflike NGC, KM448
(Rare), Fr-885 (Rare), Probszt-Unl. (cf. Probszt-2397), Zöttl-3129.
33mm. 20.88gm. By F. Matzenkopf. Type 2, with date in Roman rather
than Arabic numerals. An eye-catching commemorative produced to an
undeniably medallic standard, the rims, thick and mildly beveled,
acting as boundaries to the welled-up glassy mirrored flash of the
surfaces before reaching the dramatic relief of the central
features. Apparently unknown to Probszt in this size (he only cited
a 2 Ducat), this is the sole example of this weight and module for
the type that we have been able locate, with the added artist's
signature beneath the portrait suggesting a clearly donative or
presentation purpose for the piece.
