Description

1894-O Barber Dime, MS65
Low-Mintage Conditional Rarity

1894-O 10C MS65 PCGS. The 1894-O Barber dime, struck to the extent of 720,000 pieces, is not only a low-mintage conditional rarity in its own right, it also gains added glow as the sibling (or perhaps first cousin) of the illustrious 1894-S dimes, of which but 24 were reportedly struck. Gem examples of the 1894-O are occasionally available but hotly pursued when they appear at auction. The last PCGS-graded Gem we offered was more than eight years in our Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 3/2006), where lot 474 brought $14,950.

The present example shows exuberant eye appeal on satiny surfaces that are grayish in the center and iridescent at the obverse rim, where amber, gold, and violet prevail. The reverse is pinkish-gold, and both sides display generous luster under the light patina. No obvious signs of contact mar either side. Population: 3 in 65, 6 finer (6/14).(Registry values: N2998)
