Description

1896-O Barber Dime, MS66
Highly Elusive at This Grade

1896-O 10C MS66 PCGS. All Barber coins struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1896 are considered top rarities in their respective series. A small production of 610,000 dimes was accomplished in that year, making the issue is highly coveted by collectors across all grade levels. The 1896-O is the third of four early O-mint issues in the series, from 1894-O to 1897-O -- each with a mintage under 1 million coins. Naturally, they are among the most difficult Barber dimes to find in Mint State grades. The 1896-O is also an underrated issue compared to the key-date 1895-O. This brilliant and frosty example is well-struck on both sides, save for minor softness on the 6 in the date. A tiny nick in front of Liberty's mouth is the sole mark to mention, visible under magnification. At the Premium Gem level, this coin is one of only eight pieces so graded at PCGS including three MS66+ examples, and there are none finer (11/24).(Registry values: N4719)
