    1896-S Dime, Toned MS66
    Scarce, Underrated Issue

1896-S 10C MS66 NGC. Taken from our 1999 FUN catalog, most of this description still applies: "While lacking the immediate recognition as a rarity that certain other dates possess, the 1896-S has begun to be recognized in recent years as a coin that is difficult in all grades, and comparable in overall scarcity to the 1896-O. ... This piece shows partially reflective fields on each side (a common trait for this issue) and the pristine surfaces are overlaid with multiple shadings of deep violet-rose patina. An elusive opportunity for the Barber dime collector." Census: 10 in 66 (1 in 66+), 0 finer (7/19).
