Description
Outstanding Premium Gem 1896-S Barber Dime
1896-S 10C MS66 PCGS. Ex: Duckor Collection. This issue and
the 1896-O are virtually identical in mintage and overall rarity.
The mintage totaled 575,056 coins, or about 35,000 less than the
'96-O. Both have identical populations in this Premium Gem grade
level. The strike is exquisite with full obverse and reverse
details. The surfaces are mostly brilliant, if partially masked by
pale gold color. Although a few of the faintest hairlines are
visible, the surfaces are essentially pristine. Like the 1895-S
dime, the mintmark is clearly shelf doubled. Although equality may
have finally been reached, until recently, this 1896-S issue, with
a lower mintage and similar population, would often sell for half
or less the price of a similar 1896-O dime. Such a situation
suggests to us the underrated nature of this issue. Population: 5
in 66, 0 finer (4/09).From The Mark Miller Registry Set of Barber Dimes.(Registry values: N4719)
