Description

Scarce 1896-S Barber Dime, MS 66

1896-S MS 66 NGC. While lacking the immediate recognition as a rarity that certain other dates possess, the 1896-S has begun to be recognized in recent years as a coin that is difficult in all grades, and comparable in overall scarcity to the 1896-O. Rated as a High R.4 in mint condition, this is one of only three pieces certified in this lofty grade by NGC (8/98). This piece shows partially reflective fields on each side (a common trait for this issue) and the pristine surfaces are overlaid with multiple shadings of deep violet-rose patina. An elusive opportunity for the Barber dime collector.
