    Description

Splendid Toned Gem 1909-D Barber Dime

1909-D 10C MS65 PCGS. This is one of those sleeper issues that is not immediately recognized as a rarity in the series, but the mintage of 954,000, and the low population, both confirm that elusive nature of this date. For whatever reason, perhaps as a matter of chance, the survival rate is quite low in relation to the mintage. It is also one of just five coins in the entire Duckor Collection of Barber Dimes that grades less than MS66. PCGS population data reveals that this date ranks 16th in Mint State grades, with only 49 examples graded by the West coast service. This Gem example is deeply toned with golden-brown and sea-green toning provided a base for a variety of additional hues. All of the design features on both sides are substantially complete, if not fully struck. The surfaces have exceptional underlying mint frost. This is one of the most important examples in the present offering, and it is sure to garner considerable interest at the sale. Population: 6 in 65, 6 finer (11/05).
