1892 Half Dollar, Superb MS68
Paramount Barber Type Coin

1892 50C MS68 PCGS. CAC. Mint Director J.P. Kimball had considerable influence on the passage of what became the Mint Act of September 26, 1890, specifying that coin designs could be changed without congressional approval, if they had been in use at least 25 years. In 1891, a circular requesting proposals for new minor silver coinage designs was sent to 10 of America's premier sculptors, but failed to produce desirable results. Thus, the Treasury opened the competition to the public and a panel of judges, one of which was Mint Engraver Charles Barber, was appointed to oversee the design selection. Entries submitted totaled 300, but none were judged worthy of a prize, and only two received Honorable Mention. In the shadow of this, Barber submitted his own design for dimes, quarter, and half dollars, which was adopted for coinage in 1892.

The mintage for Philadelphia half dollars during the inaugural year of Barber coinage was 934,000 pieces. Many examples were saved as the first of their kind, but few were so carefully preserved so as to garner a Superb Gem grade in modern times. This stunning example is the sole finest at NGC, and ranks with a single MS68 PCGS coin as the finest of the date overall (9/15). The surfaces retain full mint bloom and radiant luster, and also boast virtually perfect preservation. A gorgeous melange of medium intensity cobalt-blue, crimson, lavender, and golden-tan patina further enhance each side.
