Description

1892-O Micro O Half Dollar, Good 4
Necessary for a Complete Barber Half Set

1892-O 50C Micro O, FS-501, Good 4 PCGS. The Micro O variety was created when an O mintmark punch for quarters was used in place of the regular, larger mintmark intended for use on half dollar dies (Cherrypickers' Guide, 2012). The PCGS website estimates that fewer than 100 pieces are known. PCGS and NGC have graded 82 examples in all grades, and our Auction Archives show most appearances of the variety occurring since about the year 2000.

This Good 4 offering displays mostly deep-gray fields that highlight light silver-gray devices. Relatively strong definition shows on the obverse, including Liberty's ear and jawline, and the date, stars, and legend. Also, the rim is complete (except for the dentils). The reverse shield and wings show minor detail, but the rim is worn into the tops of the letters UNITED STATES OF, and AMERICA is nearly worn away. Most letters in HALF DOLLAR are quite strong despite, and nearly all of the Micro O mintmark shows. This variety is essential for the completion of a Barber half collection. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 11 in 4, 30 finer (1/18).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2014), lot 4545.
