Description

1896-O Barber Half Dollar, AU58
Lustrous and Lightly Toned

1896-O 50C AU58 PCGS. Belying its mintage of 924,000 coins, the 1896-O Barber half is rare in any Mint State grade, and even in the upper AU grades. Problem-free AU58 examples of this date are far more difficult to acquire than most collectors realize, as PCGS and NGC combined report only 13 such coins (10/25). This piece displays satiny fields and peripheral frames of russet and blue-green toning, leaving the interiors ivory-champagne. Stars 3 and 11 on the obverse, and eagle's right (facing) shoulder on the reverse, show the usual strike softness typically associated with this 1890s New Orleans issue. PCGS Population: 9 in 58, 25 finer (10/25).(Registry values: N991)
