Description

1896-O Barber Half, MS64
Low-Mintage Date, Few Saved

1896-O 50C MS64 PCGS. With a mintage of under a million pieces and few examples saved, it is little wonder that the 1896-O half dollar would be an elusive issue, but few non-specialists realize its condition rarity in Choice and better states. This interesting near-Gem has beguiling luster, powerful with distinct elements of satin. The peripheral toning is lovely, gold-peach all around with a leading edge of azure at the right obverse. The untoned centers are pleasingly preserved, and the portrait sports a razor-sharp strike. Outstanding quality and eye appeal for the designation. Population: 8 in 64, 6 finer (6/13).
Ex: Houston Signature (Heritage, 12/2008), lot 758.
