Description

1896-O Barber Half Dollar, MS64+
Only Certified Prooflike Example

1896-O 50C MS64+★ Prooflike NGC. The 1896-O Barber half dollar claims a low mintage of 924,000 pieces, making it an elusive better date in the series. Most of the coins circulated heavily at the time of issue and few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors, making the 1896-O especially difficult to locate in high grade. This Plus-graded Choice example, the only Prooflike specimen at NGC, has been awarded the Star designation, attesting to its quality and eye appeal within the grade. The design elements are well-detailed, with just a touch of the usual softness on the central reverse. The well-preserved, lustrous surfaces feature brilliant silver centers, with vivid highlights of emerald-green and cobalt-blue toning at the peripheries. The fields exhibit much prooflike reflectivity. Census: 7 in 64*, 1 in 64+★ Prooflike, 7 finer (5/21).
