Description

1896-O Half Dollar, MS66
Finest Certified by NGC

1896-O 50C MS66 NGC. The 1896-O half dollar, from a mintage fewer than 1 million pieces, has long been known to be one of the most difficult in the series to locate in Mint State grades. David Lawrence, in his Complete Guide to Barber Halves, rates this issue second only to the 1904-S in the series in overall Mint State rarity. NGC and PCGS combined have certified fewer than 40 Uncirculated examples.
Cobalt-blue, orange-gold, and lavender toning gravitates to the margins of this Premium Gem, leaving the central areas mostly brilliant. Potent luster exudes from each side, close inspection of which reveals just a few minute, grade-consistent marks. The design features are well-struck for an O-mint coin, and only the upper-right shield corner and adjacent feathers are weakly impressed. Census: 1 in 66, 0 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079)
