Description

Delightful Gem 1897-S Half

1897-S 50C MS65 NGC. The 1897-S half is roughly equal in rarity to the 1897-O in most grades, though nearly half again as many were struck, and Gems are condition rarities. Both the obverse and reverse are frosty-white and virtually untoned. The piece is well-preserved with minor as-struck flaws more prominent than post-striking abrasions: a tiny planchet void (as struck) near the point of the truncation of Liberty's neck is mentioned for pedigree purposes. Faint roller marks (also as produced) remain over the eagle's right (facing) shoulder from a slightly soft strike, but all other areas are uncommonly sharp for the type. Census: 7 in 65, 6 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N4719)
