Elegant 1897-S Barber Half Dollar, MS67
The Cataloger's Choice

1897-S 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Other than the stunning 1892 Micro O half dollar, this 1897-S is the cataloger's favorite among all of Dale Friend's half dollars. It combines technical superiority, aesthetic desirability, and rarity, all into a single silver package. PCGS has only certified 42 submissions of the issue in all Mint State grades, and that population probably represents just a couple dozen actual coins.
Among all different Barber issues, the 1897-S ranks holds the 10th lowest PCGS population of any date and mintmark combination, other than the 1892 Micro O. A top-10 list of the lowest population issues reads like a who's who of Barber half dollar rarities. In order: 1896-O (24), 1901-O (26), 1904-S (30), 1900-O (31), 1898-S (32), 1902-S (34), 1902-O (37), 1901-S (38), 1904-O (40), and 1897-S (42). The data is current as of October 2008.
This coin, finer than either the Eliasberg or Pryor specimens, and equal to the Dr. Thaine B. Price coin, is fully brilliant and prooflike with excellent cameo contrast on both sides. Nearly perfect surfaces reflect a few tiny flakes or nicks, although some may remain from the original planchet. The fields exhibit microscopic striae from die preparation or polishing. Both sides are boldly defined down to the most intricate details. Wispy gold toning is faintly visible, primarily along the reverse border. Population: 4 in 67, 0 finer (10/08).
