    Description

    1897-S Barber Half, MS68
    Sole Finest Certified

1897-S 50C MS68 NGC. The 1897-S is well-known as a scarce issue in mint condition, and especially so in MS65 and better grades. The mintage was a generous 933,900 pieces, but apparently the vast majority were dropped into circulation and stayed there. Of the coins that were set aside, a great many '97-S halves have been cleaned and stripped of their original surfaces; thus, it is difficult to locate a coin with original color. There are fewer than 100 coins (including an unknown number of resubmissions) in Mint State at both of the major services combined (1/16).
Above MS65, the certified population drops to only only 14 submissions.

This is the sole finest example at either NGC or PCGS. The surfaces on this piece are nothing short of extraordinary, as one would expect from a coin in this superior grade. The fields are bright and prooflike with moderate mint frost over the devices. Each side shows a delicate interplay of blue and rose coloring, while the mirroring in the fields makes the array on this piece especially vibrant. The striking details are especially bold. An exceptional Barber half and a landmark coin for the issue.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
