1899 Half Dollar, MS65 Prooflike
Strong Field / Device Contrast
1899 50C MS65 Prooflike NGC. As first glance this coin could
easily pass for a true proof, so deep and well-mirrored is the
reflectivity. The centers are uniformly silver-white on both sides,
but the color melds into pleasing cherry-red hues around the rims
on both sides. This fully struck piece certainly appears high-end
for the assigned grade. NGC has only certified three 1899 half
dollars as Prooflike, one in MS62 and one other as MS65, placing
this piece as tied for finest (9/18).Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4-5/2009), lot 801, where it brought $6,325.
