Description

1899-O Barber Half, MS65
Bright Prooflike Fields

1899-O 50C MS65 PCGS. David Lawrence, in his The Complete Guide to Barber Halves, writes that this date "Sometimes comes P/L." There is no denying that this is the case for the present example. Moreover, a cameolike effect results when the coin is rotated under a light source. The design features are nicely brought up, except for minor softness in the upper-right corner of the shield and the adjacent feathers. The essentially untoned centers gently transition into delicate orange-rust and aqua-green patina along the peripheries. Nicely preserved surfaces characterize each side, though a couple of minuscule ticks on the shield and some wispy slide marks on Liberty's cheek are noted for accuracy. Population: 10 in 65, 9 finer (10/19).
