Description
1899-O Barber Half, MS66+
Tied for the Finest Certified, CAC
The Price-Hugon-Shireman Specimen
1899-O 50C MS66+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: Shireman/Hugon. This
high-end Premium Gem is tied for the finest that PCGS has graded,
joined by two other MS66+ submissions, followed by eight pieces
that grade MS66 (3/20). The coin pedigrees to several fine
collections, including the Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection, a
remarkable assemblage of Barber half dollars that the late David
Akers sold in May 1998. Akers was a fan of this Premium Gem,
writing:"Virtually all of the Barber half dollars in the Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection are notable for their eye appeal, and even by the high standards of the collection, this 1899-O stands out as one of the most attractive examples."
As one of the three finest surviving 1899-O half dollars, this coin joins the Dr. Steven Duckor coin that we sold in August 2010, and another fine 1899-O that we offered in May 2004, reappearing in our 2012 FUN auction. The present coin displays delightful russet-gold in the fields, further enhanced by a thin band of blue around the periphery -- lighter towards the centers, and quite lustrous in the fields. A finely executed sharp strike delivers bold stars on the obverse and reverse, and only trivial weakness at the right claw of the eagle. This conditionally challenging New Orleans Mint example is extremely attractive, with outstanding eye appeal.
Ex: Thaine B. Price Collection (David Akers, 5/1998), lot 146; John C. Hugon Collection (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 4221; Harry Laibstain (2/26/2005); The Dr. Peter and Janice Shireman Collection/FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2016), lot 5396.(Registry values: N4719)
