Fantastic 1900-O Barber Half Dollar, MS66

1900-O 50C MS66 PCGS. CAC. The 1900-O ranks among the major "hidden" rarities of the Barber half dollar series in top grade. That is certainly due in part to the mintage of nearly 3 million coins. The mintage is the 13th highest production of the entire Barber half dollar series, including coins of all mints. While low mintages do not necessarily mean a given coin is rare, a high mintage normally does mean a coin is common. There are certainly exceptions, but such a mintage in the Barber half series is no reason to suspect an issue is hard to find. In the case of the 1900-O, it is priced higher than common issues in all grades, circulated and Mint State. The 1900-O has the fourth lowest Mint State population of all dates that PCGS has certified. Only 31 submissions have been certified in all Mint State grades. That population compares favorably with the 1904-S (30 Mint State pieces), and it is fewer than the 1901-S (38 pieces).
The Dale Friend Collection boasts an exquisite 1900-O half dollar. It has finer technical quality than the Pryor coin and a sharper strike than the Price coin. Overall, it appears about equal to the Eliasberg example.
Slight weakness is noted at the centers of this specimen, in the usual locations, but this piece is still sharper than the normal New Orleans Mint Barber half dollar. The surfaces have frosty silver luster, the obverse subdued by faint rose-gold toning with traces of pale blue. The reverse is brighter with hints of champagne. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (10/08).
