1902-S Half Dollar, MS66
A Top-Tier CAC Survivor

1902-S 50C MS66 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Queller. This high-end Premium Gem Barber half offers well-defined devices with glistening mint frost beneath speckled russet and olive-gold toning. Unlike some Uncirculated survivors, this beautifully preserved example comes free of roller marks.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS reports eight submissions in MS66 with three in MS67 (two in MS67+) and none finer. NGC shows five in MS66 and a single MS67 finer. Four in MS66 have the green CAC approval.

Heritage Commentary: The "wants of trade" necessitated an increased supply of silver subsidiary coins in 1902, but the majority of resources were still being directed toward the production of Morgan dollars. In his Annual Report of that year, Mint Director George E. Roberts wrote: "I beg ... that the provision of law which requires the coinage of 1,500,000 of silver dollars per month be repealed and that the balance of this bullion be held for subsidiary coinage." The San Francisco Mint struck 1.4 million Barber halves in 1902, and most ended up in circulation. This Premium Gem is in the top echelon of survivors among the few dozen Mint State examples graded.
