Description

1902-S Barber Half Dollar, MS66
Fourth Rarest Mint State Issue

1902-S 50C MS66 PCGS. Ex: Shireman. This seldom-seen issue is often one of the last coins acquired by advanced collectors of the Barber half dollar series. Dr. Shireman writes:

"This issue is a bit overshadowed by the 1904-S and even somewhat by the 1901-S, but examples are few and far between in MS64 and up."

The PCGS Population Report supports his comment, as that service has only certified 26 examples in MS64 and finer grades. In fact, the 1902-S has the fourth lowest PCGS population in all Mint State grades. This lovely Premium Gem exhibits mostly bold details and frosty luster with brilliant silver surfaces and dappled gold toning. A hint of weakness is evident only on the eagle's right (facing) wing junction. Population: 9 in 66 (2 in 66+), 3 finer (11/21).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2016), lot 5403.
